Family Therapy

Strengthen Relationships, Improve Communication, and Support Your Family Through Change

Every family experiences conflict, stress and periods of change. Whether you're navigating parenting challenges, supporting a loved one with mental health difficulties, managing conflict between parents and teenagers, or adjusting to major life events, family therapy provides a safe space to better understand one another and work towards healthier relationships.

At Mind Body Heart Psychology, William Wang Gang (AMHSW) provides practical, evidence-informed family therapy that focuses on improving communication, strengthening relationships, and helping families develop more effective ways of supporting one another.

William's Approach to Family Therapy

William's family therapy integrates evidence-based models including:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

  • Schema Therapy principles

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills for emotional regulation and crisis management

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Practical communication coaching

Sessions focus on helping families develop skills they can continue using outside therapy, rather than simply discussing problems. Families often leave sessions with practical strategies they can immediately begin practising at home.

What does a typical family therapy session look like?

Family therapy often begins with a joint session involving key family members. During these sessions, William observes how family members communicate, identifies recurring interaction patterns, and helps everyone understand how these patterns influence relationships.

Rather than focusing on blame, therapy encourages each family member to consider their own role within the relationship and explore meaningful changes they can make.

Depending on the family's needs, therapy may include:

  • Joint family sessions

  • Individual sessions with selected family members

  • Parent coaching

  • Communication skills training

  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution

  • Emotional regulation strategies

  • Boundary setting

  • Home practice between sessions

Not every session requires every family member to attend. Therapy is tailored to each family's circumstances and may involve different combinations of family members over time.

Family Therapy FAQs

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a collaborative approach that recognises that difficulties rarely exist in one person alone. Instead, the way family members communicate, respond to stress and relate to one another can either maintain problems or become part of the solution.

Rather than identifying one person as "the problem", family therapy explores:

  • communication patterns

  • family roles and expectations

  • relationship dynamics

  • emotional responses within the family

  • boundaries between family members

  • ways of supporting one another more effectively

The goal is to help families understand each other's perspectives, reduce conflict and build healthier ways of interacting.

What issues can family therapy address?

Family therapy may be helpful for families experiencing:

  • Ongoing parent-child conflict

  • Teenagers becoming withdrawn, oppositional or emotionally distressed

  • Difficulties communicating within the family

  • Frequent arguments or unresolved tension

  • Family members adjusting to separation, divorce or blended families

  • Supporting a loved one living with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or psychosis

  • Families supporting an autistic family member or someone with other neurodevelopmental conditions

  • Caring for an adult child with ongoing mental health challenges

  • Adult children experiencing ongoing conflict with ageing parents

  • Cultural or intergenerational differences within migrant families

  • Family stress following significant life events or trauma

Can family therapy help if one family member has a mental health condition?

Yes. Many families seek therapy because a loved one is living with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, autism spectrum disorder or another mental health condition. Therapy can help family members better understand the condition, improve communication, establish healthy boundaries and develop practical ways to support one another while maintaining their own wellbeing.

What if my family member doesn't want to attend therapy?

It's common for not everyone to feel ready for therapy. If a family member chooses not to attend, you can still benefit from individual sessions. William can help you better understand family dynamics, develop practical communication skills and explore strategies that may improve your relationships. Sometimes positive changes made by one family member can influence the broader family system over time.

How long are family therapy appointments?

Because family therapy often involves multiple people and more complex discussions, joint family sessions are generally booked as 80-minute appointments. Individual appointments of 50 minute appointments may also be recommended where clinically appropriate.

Is family therapy covered by Medicare?

Medicare does not provide rebates specifically for family or couples therapy. However, if individual family members have their own Mental Health Treatment Plan and individual mental health treatment is clinically appropriate as part of their care, Medicare rebates may be available for eligible individual services. William can discuss the most appropriate appointment structure based on your circumstances.

Can family therapy be conducted online?

Yes. Family therapy can be conducted online via secure telehealth video sessions.

Online family therapy can be particularly helpful when family members live in different locations, have busy schedules, experience mobility or transport difficulties, or feel more comfortable participating from home.

William provides telehealth family therapy for adolescents, adults and families across Australia. Joint family sessions can be conducted with multiple family members joining the same video appointment. Many families find that online sessions still allow for meaningful discussions, communication coaching and practical problem-solving, while offering greater flexibility and convenience.
