Introduction

Xiaoting (Mia) Liu is passionate about supporting individuals through emotional challenges, life transitions, and personal growth, with a strong commitment to providing warm, compassionate, and culturally responsive care. She believes healing begins when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and understood. Her therapeutic approach is collaborative, adaptable, and deeply client-centred. She views each individual as the expert of their own story, and sees her role as a curious and compassionate listener who supports clients in exploring their experiences, strengths, and goals in a safe and non-judgemental environment.

Professional Experience

Before transitioning into psychology, Xiaoting spent more than 15 years working in accounting and finance roles across both corporate and educational settings. This extensive professional experience strengthened her organisational abilities, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and capacity to work calmly and effectively under pressure.

Her background outside of psychology also provides her with a grounded understanding of the real-life challenges many people face, including stress, identity changes, balancing responsibilities, and navigating significant life transitions. Having undergone a major career transition herself, Xiaoting brings maturity, insight, and empathy into her work with clients from diverse backgrounds and life stages.

Clinical Interests and Therapeutic Approach

Xiaoting has experience supporting individuals experiencing:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma and recovery

  • Grief, loss, and major life transitions

  • Identity and self-concept challenges

  • Parenting concerns

  • Couple and family relationship difficulties

  • Women’s wellbeing

  • Personal growth and emotional resilience

She values authentic human connection and strives to create a therapeutic space where clients feel emotionally safe, respected, and supported. Her approach is flexible and responsive to each individual’s unique experiences, needs, and cultural background.

Community and Volunteer Experience

Xiaoting also volunteers in palliative care with Eastern Health, where she provides emotional support to individuals and families navigating serious illness, grief, and end-of-life challenges. This experience has strengthened her therapeutic communication skills, emotional resilience, and ability to remain calm and compassionate in emotionally complex situations. Working alongside multidisciplinary healthcare teams has further reinforced her holistic and collaborative approach to psychological care.

Languages and Cultural Responsiveness

Xiaoting is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and is passionate about supporting culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Her multicultural background and life experience enable her to work sensitively with individuals from a wide range of cultural contexts, particularly those navigating migration, adjustment, identity, and intergenerational family experiences.
